From October 28 – November 2, we took action against the fossil fuel industries’ insurers

Insure Our Survival is focusing mass nonviolent direct action on a weak spot in the criminal fossil fuel industry setting our planet on fire – their insurers.

No insurance = no drilling and digging for oil, gas and coal.

Our strategy works. After a week of national street action in February, giant insurers Zurich and major underwriters Probitas announced they would stop insuring new oil and gas projects. Before we took to the streets on the 28th October, Generali became the first major insurer to limit insurance for oil & gas.

Monday, 28 Oct: Flooding (London)

The Floods Are Here – our actions, design and messaging dramatically showed the public and media how insurers are greenlighting fossil fuel crooks to flood our homes and our lands.

Tuesday, 29 Oct: Food Shortages (London)

Extinction Rebellion activists blockaded Swiss Re HQ at the Gherkin building, demanding insurers stop backing new fossil fuel projects. Activists also targeted insurance giant wtw with chalk spray and posters.

Dozens queued with empty bowls in front of ‘The Last Potato’ in the UK, each receiving only a single pea to highlight impending food shortages.

Friday, 1 Nov: Birmingham

On November 1st, we brought a powerful flood & fire inspired march to insurers in Birmingham. We also wrote them love letters to remind them that we’re on the same team. Insuring climate wrecking projects is risky business after all.

Saturday, 2 Nov: Stratford-upon-Avon

On November 2nd, we paid Howden Insurance in Stratford-upon-Avon a visit.

‪Howden Insurance Group boast about their sustainability while making millions from insurance for the fossil fuel criminals drigging and drilling for oil, gas & coal. ‬

Fossil fuels are wrecking our climate, causing floods, undermining our food supplies and threatening to kill billions.

Without insurance, fossil fuel companies can’t take the huge financial risks of finding and exploiting oil, gas and coal fields. So Howden could stop them in their oily tracks by refusing to insure them.
